The first of many awkward moments
I realized after Justis’ baptism that that was [I think] the first time we have all been together for one of Justis’ events. And by that I mean it’s the first time that Lee and I have spent a significant amount of time with Nicci.
I don’t mean to sound like we don’t get along. I would say we don’t not get along. We aren’t close friends by any means. And obviously there have been some words exchanged. But, honestly, it could be a lot worse. I have to consider myself fairly lucky that my husband’s ex isn’t a complete pyscho. I’ve heard some horror stories that make some of our bad times seem like tiny spats. So I’ll just leave it at that.
I will say there was a little bit of an awkward moment when we were talking about Justis’ Christmas break. As I stated before, Justis will be spending Christmas with his mom. And she made the comment “He will have clothes that fit him right?” She said it in kind of a joking way, but really she was saying “put clothes on my kid that reach his ankles beotch.” I thought that was a little rude, especially in front of my family and, more importantly, right in front of Justis. I think I handled it pretty well though. I just said that he’s grown a lot in the last few months. I told her we bought him some new clothes in September that he’s already outgrown and I just bought him four new pairs of jeans. I joked, “I told him if he keeps growing he’s going to have to get a job.” What I really wanted to say is “Let’s talk about all the times he came down to visit us in too small underwear and obviously hand me down many, many times clothes. And don’t even get me started on the fact that you don’t pay child support.” But I had to take the high road. Even though the high road is not as much fun. But that was not the time, nor the place to get in to an argument. And actually, I do not believe it is my place to ever say things like that Nicci. That’s Lee’s job. But that’s not going to stop me from commenting on it on my blog.
On another note, this also gave us an opportunity to meet Nicci’s new boyfriend. He’s not really new anymore. They began seeing each other around Christmas last year. But this is the first time Lee and I have ever met him. He didn’t say much, but he seems like a nice guy. Brittany [Justis' sister] obviously really likes him and it seems like Justis is pretty fond of him as well. So he passed our initial test. Not that any of them care whether we like him or not, but we feel more comfortable meeting him.
All in all we escaped the “meeting” unscathed. This was just a dry run for graduation and Justis’ wedding. Where there will be alcohol. But we’ll all handle it like adults. Because it’s in the best interest of Justis. These are Justis’ days and I always want him to be able to enjoy these days with all of us. And enjoy them without having to worry about drama.
