Keaton’s Travel Log - Day 2

Remember me saying that Keaton would call me every night while he’s in Colorado? Yeah, neither did Keaton.

Lee dropped Keaton off at church by 6:30 on Saturday night. They took two vans to Nebraska where they met more church kids. Before Keaton left I said, “call me when you get to Nebraska!” But that went on deaf ears because I did not receive a telephone call.

From Nebraska all of the kids got on a charter bus headed for Colorado. They got in to Colorado around noon on Sunday. I figured he’d call me when they got there. But I figured wrong.

So all day Sunday goes by and I never received a phone call. No “we made it.” No “Happy Fathers Day” to Lee. Nothing.

I was frantic.

Nine o’clock this morning [8am their time] I called Carl, the church leader. I left a message on his cell phone. “Hey Carl. This is Keaton’s mom. I haven’t heard from Keaton since you guy’s left on Saturday. I’ve left him several messages on his cell phone. Can you please have him call me?”

About a half hour later my cell phone rang. I looked at the caller id. It was Carl. Huh?

So I answered it. It was actually Keaton calling me from Carl’s phone.

Fighting back tears I said, “Why haven’t you called me?”

“My cell phone doesn’t work here.”

“What?!!”

“None of my bars light up. It won’t work.”

“Why didn’t you ask Carl if you could use his phone to call me?”

“I did.”

“When?”

“Just now.”

“Yeah, just now after I called Carl this morning and told him to have you call me.”

Jeez. Don’t boys know how much mom’s worry? I hardly slept at all last night. I kept thinking “if something happened church would have called me by now, right?” Lee brought the phone in the bedroom and hung it up on the charger in case it rang in the middle of the night. I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to go to work today because my heart was literally aching. I was having thoughts about calling my Uncle Steve [who lives in Colorado] to see if he would drive to where Keaton is at to check on him.

I was half joking when I said this trip might kill me. Now I’m totally serious. If not kill me, it very well could put me in the ER.

Imagine what I’ll be like when he goes off to college. He’ll be asking me to leave his dorm room when we drop him off because I’ll be sobbing so and he’ll be embarrassed that his new roommate might see.

I’ll try and get better before then so I don’t embarrass him. But I’m not making any promises.
