And then we had a dance-off

Skyler had her first day of dance today. She did awesome. And she loved it. It was an hour long class. They did tap the first half hour and ballet the second half hour. Skyler tried everything and gave it her all. And she did it all with a big smile on her face. I’m so proud of her.

While she danced I watched her through a big picture window with the other moms and a couple of dads. I’m so bad in these types of situations. I’m very awkward around strangers. And this was no exception.

Most of these moms knew each other because their girls have been in dance for more than just this year. One of the moms started talking about her sister. Apparently her brother-in-law has been cheating on her sister and they are separated and blah, blah, blah. I kept thinking do you think your sister minds that you’re airing her dirty laundry at her niece’s dance class?

I’ve never been very good at gossip. My best friend gets mad at me because I always forget to tell her stuff when I hear it. What can I say? I’m easily distracted. So I’m always kind of an outcast during these gossip sessions at school or soccer and now dance.

I also hate to talk about my personal life with strangers. [You know, other than on the internet.] (1) If I’m ticked off at somebody, then I usually get over it within minutes and then I’m mad that I talked shit about them to strangers. And (2) I don’t want people to know just how wierd I am.

So there I stood, quietly gazing through the window at Skyler. I shifted my weight from one leg to the other for a while. Then when my back started to hurt I sat down on the bench. But this meant I had to face the other parents. Eye contact. I’m so bad at eye contact. Look at my pretty shoes. Oh yeah, eye contact. Occassionally I threw a smile at the other parents so I didn’t appear to be a bitch. I swear I’m not a bitch. I’m just shy. And awkward.

Maybe next time I’ll just drop her off and come back an hour later. We’ll see.
