Classic Rock?
Sep 18, 2006 A day in our life, It's All About Me
Late Saturday night we drove to Chicago to take the kids to Great America. And when I say late, I mean late. Like so late it was actually Sunday morning.
This was homecoming weekend so Keaton and Justis went to the homecoming game [which we won] on Friday and then Justis had the homecoming dance on Saturday night. This meant we couldn’t leave for Chicago until the dance was over at 11pm.
So I was driving along in my automobile, in the middle of the night, trying to keep my eyelids open so I didn’t kill my family. Honestly, I’m up that late every night so it really wasn’t a problem for me. But everybody else in the car was snoozing.
As we drove along the radio stations started to go out as we moved out of their listening areas. At one point I turned it to a new station and was rocking out to Blondie. Then The Steve Miller Band came on. Followed by Talking Heads. These were all songs I remember from the early ’80s [not their really early stuff from the '70s.]
After Talking Heads the DJ said, “You’re listening to the best classic rock.” And I thought that’s not classic rock. And then it hit me. I have become my mother.
I remember vividly riding with my mom twenty years back and listening to “her” radio station. We were listening to things like Cat’s in the Cradle and Leader of the Band. You know, songs from the early to mid 70’s. And I would groan and roll my eyes at the fact that I was forced to listen to this stuff. [But I actually really like both of those songs now.]
I imagine this is how my kids probably feel about songs like Call Me and Gangster of Love.
And I was once again reminded that I am now old. Of course, this is not the first time [or even the second time] I’ve been reminded that I am now the ancient one. And I’m sure it won’t be the last. It’s just funny how there are these moments where you realize you are now the grown up and you have to stop and think “when did that happen?”
Pics from our trip to Great America are coming to a blog near you…maybe tonight, but probably tomorrow.

I remember when the Police were considered a punk band in the late 70’s before the term modern rock was coined. I must be really old.
