Still playing in the snow
Jan 15, 2007 A day in our life
When I was a little girl I LOVED playing in the snow. I remember when I was in junior high, my best friend, Cammie, and I would play outside all day long. I always took layers to a new extreme. I’d wear no less than three pairs of socks. I’d put on a pair of long underwear. Then a pair of jeans. And then slide an over-sized pair of sweats on over that. I’d wear a t-shirt, a long sleeve shirt and a sweatshirt. I put on my snow boots. Then I’d put on my coat, two pairs of gloves, a scarf and a stocking cap. We stayed outside until dark making snow forts, digging holes we could lay in, hiding from cars as they drove by [as if the driver cared about two stupid girls building a snow fort].
Now that I’m slightly older, I don’t get as many opportunities to play in the snow. I can’t just get my snow gear on and jump in the snow when I get home from work. There are other tasks that need to be done like making supper, helping with homework, reading stories and giving baths.
But with this weekend being our first significant snow fall of this year’s winter season, I couldn’t pass this up. Normally I would go in to the office on Mondays. But today I decided to work from home. This kept me safe from the crazy drivers who need a day to remember what the roads are like when it snows. And it meant I could go outside and play in the snow with the kids over my lunch break.
I toned down my old “snow uniform.” I only put on two pairs of socks. I scratched the long underwear, but I did put on a pair of Lee’s slicky pants over my jeans [which were totally awesome...they kept me warm and they were completely dry the second I stepped in to the house]. And, of course, I wore my coat, hat and gloves.
We tried to make snowballs, but the snow isn’t wet enough to stick. So we ended up just throwing snow at each other. I’m pretty sure we call got some snow down our fronts.
But it was just right for sledding. I even went down the hill once. You know what sucks about sledding? Having to walk back up the hill when you’re done. But we had fun nonetheless.
We also made some awesome snow angels. Let me give a little visual explanation of how to make a snow angel.
First, find an untouched area of snow that’s about twice your body size and jump in.
Start with your arms out at your side and your feet together, like this:
Then move your feet out and your arms up as high as you can get them to get full wings, like this:
In the end you’re left with this.
There, now you can’t ever say I never taught you anything.

The first picture reminds me of the kid from A Christmas Story that falls down and can’t get up. Then I scrolled down and saw you were teaching us something. I still laughed though. Sorry.
