Arrr, ye matey

This morning my grandma called at just before ten and asked me what everybody who calls me that early asks, “Did I wake you?” After 33 years on this Earth people have finally come to realize that I never have been, nor ever will be, a morning person. It’s about time people begin to accept this fact.

So anyway, my grandma was calling to invite us to an outdoor play. I had actually only been up about ten minutes when she called so I kind of agreed without even listening to what I was agreeing to. But we had a great time so all is good.

The play was on the grounds of a huge mansion in town. Nobody lives in the mansion anymore. Now it’s just a historical place to tour and they have a lot activities on the ginormous lawn each summer [for example, the Balloon Glow].

This play was The Incredible Adventures of Captain Spoon: The Forgetful Pirate. As the title suggests, Captain Spoon has some problems remembering where he kept his stuff, like his treasure. But he does have a map to help him find it. It reminded me a little of Dora the Explorer. If only Captain Spoon had a backpack to hold his map.

When we got there each of the kids got a map. This way the kids could help Captain Spoon navigate. First it was 40 paces to the parrot. Then on to the bodacious sharks. Followed by the dancing octopus. Then we got some help from the blacksmith. There was a little stop off to come up with a compromise for two dueling ship crews. And finally we made it to the map maker [or cartographer as he insisted we call him].

There was a lot of interaction with the crowd. We got to choose Captain Spoon’s sidekick’s pirate name; Pepperoni Penny. We played a little game of “Gertrude Squawks” with the parrot, Gertrude. It was like Simon Says only with a parrot instead of Simon. We did the wave [like at football games] so the totally rad sharks could play in the surf. We clapped along to the tap dancing octopus. We choose weapons for Captain Spoon when he was dueling the blacksmith. We even became pirates by reciting the Pirate’s Code.

When we got the Pirate’s Code portion of the program we got to sing a song. It was a song about listening to your parents, being nice to your friends and being an all around good kid. But that wasn’t all we had to do to be a pirate. We also had to wear our pirate hats. Only we didn’t bring pirate hats. Luckily our map folded in to a pirate hat.

In the end Captain Spoon found his ship, got a new friendly crew and found his treasure. All was good.

It was a great time. And the kids loved it. Plus after the show my grandma took us out to dinner at Red Robin. Yum! She spoils us so.

  1. This sounds awesome! Red Robin is one of our favorite places because it’s so loud we don’t have to *worry* about our little mateys.
