This is why we never go out
Lee and I went out last night. Together. Without kids. Now that Keaton and Justis are old enough to babysit it’s easier for us to have a date night. And yet we still hardly every make it out of the house. So you know what it means when we finally get out. It means all hell breaks loose.
A friend of mine invited us to a local comedy club to enjoy some great comedians and imbibe in some alcoholic beverages [or Pepsi in Lee's case]. We worked up an appetite with all that hysterical laughter, so we headed to steak house for dinner afterwards. We were gone about four and half hours and returned home around 11pm.
Normally Justis has all the kids in bed by this time. But when we got home Skyler was laying on the couch watching TV. I said, “It’s way past bedtime big girl.” She responded with, “But I’m sick.”
You may remember over a year ago Skyler’s jaw swelled up pretty bad. We were sure it was mumps, but her mumps test came back negative. And then she had her tonsils removed and we thought all was good.
But we were wrong.
Every few months her jaw swells up. We put ice on it and after a day or two it’s fine. My aunt has the same problem some times and she found out it was caused by some food or something getting stuck in to her saliva gland. So last night I had Skyler swish some water through her mouth to see if that helped. It didn’t seem to make a difference though. But we were able to convince her to go to bed and she slept through the night.
So we thought we were good.
Then around 12:30am I could hear coughing. I asked Lee, “Who is that?” But he couldn’t really hear it over the TV. After a few more minutes it was getting louder and it was non-stop. Lee got up to go investigate. Turns out it was Caleb. And as soon as Lee opened the door I could hear Caleb almost barking and sounding like he was gasping for breath. I leaped out of bed.
My first thought was croup. But it’s not really the season for it and Caleb is pretty much out of the age range for croup. Plus he was fine earlier in the day; no signs of a cold at all. But now he was barking, had a runny nose and was having trouble breathing.
The breathing difficulty was freaking me out and I was on the verge of throwing on my sandals with my PJs and rushing him to the ER. But instead we pulled out the nebulizer and I began to give him a breathing treatment while Lee got the cough medicine.
Once the treatment was over and the medicine was down, I put Caleb back in bed. He was still crying and coughing so I laid down next to him and rubbed his head until he fell asleep.
He slept the rest of the night without incident and woke up raring to go this morning. He sounds a little hoarse, but he’s not coughing at all today. So I don’t know what the deal is.
This must have been our punishment for going out and having a good time. How dare we.

Yes, what horrible parents you are!
Welcome to the club
That swelling thing is very scary - I’ve never heard of anything like that before…
Jake was sick too. He was fine all day. Then about 11 pm started coughing, puked all over and spiked a temp of 103. I gave him a breathing treatment, steriods and motrin and in the morning he was fine. Weird little boys.
