Why does this always happen right before a big event?

Skyler’s big performance is coming up quickly. And we trying to get everything in order for the big day.

She’s had weeks of rehearsals and now knows every step by heart. I had her run through it in the living room on Friday night. She was teaching me the steps. And I was reminding her to keep her arms and legs straight.

She needs to have a pink leotard (which she already has), pink tights (again, all ready have) and pink ballet slippers. Oops. We only have white. I hate it when I procrastinate. So last week I paid an arm and a leg for two day shipping on a pair of pink ballet slippers. I needed them to come quickly so I could send them back to exchange for a new pair in case they didn’t fit. Ballet slippers just don’t fit like normal shoes. Luckily the ones I got fit.

And then the dance studio sent me instructions on how to make a bun. On Friday night [at Girl's Night Out] I got further instructions from my friend, Carrie [who is, not only my high school friend, but also our fabulous hair stylist].

But while I was learning how to make the perfect bun, Skyler was trying something a little new with her hair.

New haircut

You can’t really tell from this picture, but Skyler cut her own hair. This is not the first time she’s done this. Check out her hair in this video. And that was after I took her to the hair dresser (not Carrie) to try to fix it. When she was three and four years old Skyler cut her hair several times. I used to put part of her hair up in a tiny pony tail on the top of her head. One day she cut that pony tail off. In the video she cut her hair at ear length on just one side of her head. It was quite pretty. Another time she cut her bangs. Carrie was able to fix that though. And then we had a serious talk about how nobody could cut her hair but Carrie. And she seemed to understand.

So imagine my surprise when I saw her Saturday afternoon. Her tummy was upset so I was pushing on her tummy to make sure it was just a tummy ache and not something more serious. Then I looked up in her eyes. And up to her hair. That’s when I gasped.

“WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOUR HAIR?”

She started to cry. Apparently while I was out with my friends, she got a comb stuck in her hair so she cut it out. Lee found the hair in the bathroom and immediately questioned Skyler. She told him not to tell me because she wanted to tell me herself. But then she forgot and I found out on my own.

Now I don’t know what to do. I was worried her hair wasn’t really long enough for a bun in the first place and now she has a patch of half in hair smack dab in the middle of her forehead. I’m hoping lots of gel and hairspray with hold it down. Otherwise she’ll have a bun and a small mohawk. Do angels have mohawks?

  1. Tee hee! I may or may not have done this once right before my mom took us to get family photos…

  2. Poor thing, my mom once botched my hair - gave me what I lovingly refer to as bangs in the back of my head. It was awful.

Can you try doing her part off to the side? Combing the long hair over the spot where it was cut?
