Sex kills

A few days ago I wrote a post over at Weary Parent about talking to you kids about sex. I was referring to talking to my teens about sex, but somehow a conversation last night with Skyler & Spencer turned to the topic.

We were watching a program on TV and the woman was talking to her fiancé. Spencer asked me what a fiancé was so I told him. Then Skyler & Spencer started asking me questions about when Lee and I got married. I told them about our wedding and how we renewed our vows on our first anniversary. It was all very innocent.

Then Spencer said, “I don’t think I’m every going to get married.”

“I thought you wanted to have kids someday. How are you going to have kids if you don’t get married?” I asked.

And here’s where the conversation got tricky. Spencer said, “[Some kid at school] said you get kids by having…” He trailed off.

“By having what?” I asked.

He raised his eyebrow and gave me a look as if to say, “You know.”

“By having sex?” I said.

“MOM!” Spencer proclaimed, shocked that I would use such a word in his presence.

I said, “What? Sex isn’t a bad word.”

He said, “It is for kids.”

And then Skyler chimed in. “Sex is bad for kids. Kids could die.”

What?!? Who said kids will die from sex? Where do kids get this stuff?

However I neither confirmed nor denied that claim. I know, I know. You’re supposed to be all open with your kids about sex and stuff. But they are eight. At eight I’m fine with them thinking they will die if they have sex. I wish I could convince Keaton and Justis that you will die if you have sex. Then maybe I could be assured they won’t even try it until they are well in to their late twenties. However, something tells me I won’t be able to get away with that with them.

I’m SO using that. And, who’s to say that with HIV and AIDS, that it isn’t a possibility? You really have to be so careful, so a slight, little-white-lie is just for their own good! At least, that’s what I’m saying to convince myself it’s okay.
