More insanity from the “church”
Jan 26, 2008 In my humble opinion
Shirley Phelps-Roper was interviewed on the Kane show on Hot 99.5 (a radio station in Washington D.C.). Shirley is a member of the “church” who wanted to protest outside Heath Ledger’s funeral. In fact she is one of the “pastor’s” daughters. Unfortunately she also has 11 children who she is teaching these spiteful and hatred filled messages too; including an illegitimate child. She believes she has been forgiven for her sin of having a child out of wedlock because she is preaching “God’s will” now.
You can listen to the podcast of this interview if you can stomach it. I realize I am just doing exactly what she wants by publicizing their message. She’s getting her word out to the rest of the nation. But you have to listen to her speak to realize just how delusional and psychotic she is.
This “church” not only believes Heath Ledger is in hell because he played a gay man in a movie. But they also thank God for the Asia tsunami, the 9/11 terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina. They believe our soldiers die in Iraq because we allow people to be gay in America. Every natural disaster or bad event happens because of homosexuality. Apparently the anti-gay message is the only message this church preaches.
When the DJ asked her why she is protesting Heath Ledger’s funeral and/or memorial services she said it’s because he used his platform to say God is a liar and homosexuality is ok. She claimed he “cheated on his wife” with his role in Brokeback Mountain. (1) He was not married when he filmed Brokeback Mountain. And (2) it was a role in a movie. They weren’t really having sex. It was acting.
When asked why she can’t just let the family grieve for their son in peace she said, “They brought that wrath upon themselves. They are not grieving. They are in full on angry rebellion against God.” Seriously?!? Even if God was angry with Heath Ledger’s decision to play a gay man in a movie (which is just ludicrous, but for arguments sake…), what did his family do? Why is God mad at them? According to Shirley they are rebelling against God because they should be saying we “love our dead gay son” (to quote from Heathers), but telling others they should not be part of the gay lifestyle. They should be using this as a platform to come out against gay people (even though Heath was not gay). As if, even if the family truly believed that, they would use their own son’s death to give that message. This woman is so delusional.
During the interview Shirley said, “There are only two types of people that inhabits the world. And God hates them both. You are either a filthy practicing pervert or you are an enabler of their sin.” I’m curious to know which category Shirley puts herself in since these are the only two options and God hates them both.
The DJ played an Elton John song through part of the interview. I believe the intentional irony was lost on Shirley.
The DJ also disconnected the call at one point because Shirley kept using the f-word. Not the four letter curse word, but the word that got Isaiah Washington fired from Grey’s Anatomy. And after they called her back and again explained the rules to her, she then got back on the air and said she hung up on him. Yeah, right lady. In your world.
It scares me a little bit that I share the same soil with people like this.

Unfortunately, my spiritual community (I’m Pagan) has been paying attention to Phelps’ activities for many years. Fortunately, they are a small group, and so “out there” that truly, no one is doing anything but laughing at them. They will eventually either be ignored or legislated away, or die out because of inbreeding when no one new joins their church to mate with Phelps’ grandchildren.

I agree with her (cough cough wink wink) I mean come the heck on…you know God is sitting up in Heaven hanging out at the pearly gates waiting with nothing better to do than gay bash. Forget starving kids or those dying of an incurrable disease. It’s the homosexuals he has time for. That and the praise from the professional football players who do the point and thank you when they get a touchdown.
I am all for freedom of speech. Hopefully most of us know a LOON when we see/hear one.
Kudos to Heath Ledger for being such a believable actor!

She’s obviously mentally unstable, but, how do you think we feel having to share the soil with radical liberals like you?
You with your Christian bashing are just as bad as she is with her gay bashing. Think about, lib-boy. Intolerance runs both ways.

Is he serious? Really? Last I knew, Christine, you weren’t the one wanting to crash the funeral of an actor who had portrayed a gay man in a movie. Crazy, crazy.
I love how he refers to you as a “radical liberal.” You may be. You may not be, and politics have nothing to do with it anyway. This issue is about a group of lunatics having no regard for parental suffering over the loss of a child. I think in your post you were simply pointing out how insane this woman’s point of view is and how absolutely wrong it is for these people to demonstrate in the wake of this family’s personal tragedy. And how did he make the assumption, based on this post, that you are a “Christian bashing” sort of woman? Is he claiming that Shirley is a Christian? Because if she is what Christianity is all about, let me be the first in line to bash it.

Wow Chris. If you want to call me a radical liberal at least do it on the right post. Perhaps this post.
There was no Christian bashing here. Shirley Phelps-Roper is not a Christian. Just because she calls herself one doesn’t mean she is one. When my son was a toddler he thought he was Batman. But, in fact, he actually was not Batman. Christians do not protest outside the funerals of children. Christians don’t protest outside the funeral of a soldier who fought to protect our country (and, ironically, our freedom of speech). Christians offer love and support to those who are grieving. I wasn’t bashing Christians. I was bashing Shirley Phelps-Roper and the church she belongs to.
This hatred that Shirley Phelps-Roper is spouting every chance she gets is not part of God and Jesus’ teachings. At least it’s not part of the teachings we teach the kids in my Sunday School class. Yes, I am a Sunday School teacher. And I am a Christian. Presbyterian to be exact. And I am insulted that Shirley Phelps-Roper and her church are using our God to preach about hatred. Clearly her father warped her brain on what those passages in the Bible truly mean. Some day she will meet her maker and understand that.
