Love in the second grade

As soon as Spencer got home from school yesterday he announced, “Mom, I have a girlfriend.”

I said, “Oh yeah. What’s her name?:

“Lindsay,” he replied with a big, cheesy grin on his face.

“Did you like a Lindsay last year? Is it the same girl?” I asked.

“No, that Lindsay had blond hair and blue eyes. She moved away this summer. This Lindsay has brown hair and brown eyes,” he explained.

“Oh, is she in your class?” I asked.

“No, she’s in Mrs. B’s class.”

“How do you know here then?”

“I saw her at lunch and I asked her to be my girlfriend.”

“And she said ‘yes,’” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Do you play together at recess?”

“Yep.”

“Do you hold hands?”

“Mom!” Spencer said as his face turned red.

I’ll take that as a no.

Kids are so funny at this age with their “girlfriends.” They probably won’t speak another word to each other for the rest of the school year. But they’re boyfriend and girlfriend now.

If only love was that simple, lol. My son is in Kindergarten and while he doesn’t have a girlfriend, he has a girl he likes. Whene I asked him why he liked her his response was because she’s a normal girl mom. What he meant was that she didn’t dress all fancy or wear her hair in a pony tail. It was too funny.
