Screw you Father Winter

Wow this has been a crazy winter. It literally snows about every other day. The kids have missed so many days of school they have about two weeks to make up. I’ve worked from home more this winter than I’ve worked in the office. I’ve missed so many classes at school it will be a miracle if I can pull Bs this term, let alone As.

Yesterday we got 5.5 more inches of snow. And ice. Fun times. The kids didn’t have school today because it was an inservice day. But now school has been cancelled tomorrow. So another snow day to make up. (Apparently the superintendent reads my blog because he’s now letting us know the night before.)

I attempted to make my way to class tonight. On a normal sunny day it takes me about a half an hour to get to school; 45 minutes if I go the speed limit the whole way. But not today.

Today I got on the interstate and didn’t even get twenty feet before I ran in to standstill traffic. Luckily I was able to get off the interstate there and avoid that standstill. Instead of continuing on the interstate, I decided to take a side road that travels parallel to the interstate. As I was making my way on that side road the traffic lanes were getting smaller and smaller as the wind was blowing snow drifts in to the road.

And then I hit traffic. Normally nobody takes this side road. Why would you when the speed limit is only 55 and the you can go 70 on the interstate? But I guess a lot of people had the same idea. At least we weren’t just sitting. No we were traveling at a remarkable speed of 15 miles per hour. Woo hoo!

45 minutes later I finally made it to the next city. 45 MINUTES for a trip that should have taken about 8 minutes. I could see the interstate. Still a standstill. I could see the traffic in front of me. Nothing but miles of rear lights. And I was still 20 minutes (on a good day…probably another hour and a half today) from school.

So I gave up. I flipped around and made my way back home. Surprisingly the northbound lane on the interstate was moving faster than the southbound. I got to go all way up to 40 mph on the way home.

Winter driving

And while I was going 40 mph on the interstate that was covered with ice and drifting snow, I whipped out my cell phone and shot a picture* of the soutbound traffic. Yeah, I’m safe like that.

*Please ignore the dirty windshield and crappy photography.

I used to take pictures when I drove to my student teaching schools (one hour, five minutes to one, 47 minutes to the other). Yes, terribly safe thing to do. If I hadn’t amused myself with that, I would have probably fallen asleep.

I got a lot of pretty cool pictures though!

I second that emotion! Pretty much mirrors what I was writing on Sunday during the lull after the storm – you know, before the 30 mile an hour winds settled in.
