Cooking with Bean

It’s 3:15 in the afternoon and I’m eating breakfast and lunch. Not brunch, but breakfast and lunch. Brunch is when you eat one meal around the noon hour that combines both breakfast and lunch. I am eating two distinct meals, one right after other. I just finished my cherry turnover. Now I’m digging in to my salad. Normally I try to eat breakfast before 10am and lunch around 1pm, but my work day has been insane all day. It’s my work-from-home day. I’m supposed to be doing laundry. And running on the treadmill. And making a crock pot meal for dinner tonight. (On my breaks, of course.) But people won’t stop giving me work today.

So anyway, today’s post is brought to you by the Bean kitchen. Here are some tips I just learned while making that crock pot meal that I feel I should pass along.

1. When peeling potatoes, keep track of your fingers at all time. I tried to peel my fingernail right off my finger. It’s painful. I highly discourage doing that.

2. When cutting those potatoes, keep track of your fingers at all times. (Are you sensing a theme here?) Try to cut only the potatoes. Cutting the tip of your fingers hurts. I highly discourage it.

3. (This tip isn’t from today’s meal, but from a meal I made over the weekend.) When removing the lid that the can opener just cut off, don’t place your fingers on the edges of the can to pull it off the magnet. Instead put your thumb on the bottom of the lid and your forefinger on the top of the lid and pull gently. Your fingertips will thank you. You thought a paper cut hurt. Try a metal cut cut. Ouch. But it does look pretty in the only band-aids you might have in the house; for example the Spiderman band-aids we have. Excuse me while I add band-aids to my Lee’s grocery list.

4. Things would be much easier if you thawed the brats before you just threw their frozen links in to a frying pan.

5. Juice seeps out of brats when you are cooking them in a frying pan. Said juice is hot.

(Here’s a funny little story about brats. I put “brats” on the grocery list, as in bra like a woman to keep her boobs from slapping the tops of her shoes plus “ts.” When Lee came home he said, “Skyler wanted to know why you put “brats” [like children who are being bad] on the list? Don’t we have enough of those?” Ha Ha. He thinks he’s so funny.)

6. While you are peeling and cutting potatoes, don’t forget about the brats in the frying pan. They will turn black.

So there you have it. Cooking tips from The Bean Blog. Now you know you want to come over for dinner and eat some black brats stew with a hint of blood flavoring, don’t you?

  1. I slice at least one finger nail off when peeling potatoes. It’s ok really - it’s not just you. It adds texture to whatever you are cooking. HA.
