Many of my firsts
Yesterday’s masturbation post left me speechless. So I totally stole this little meme from This Woman’s Work for inspiration.
1. Who was your first prom date? I never went to prom. I was supposed to. I had a dress. I had shoes dyed to match. I had a boyfriend that said we were going to prom. And then just a couple weeks before prom he dumped me. Actually he didn’t even have the courage to dump me. He just stopped answering the phone when I called. I had to have one of my male friends call his house and ask for him. Then I pounced and got on the phone, yelling, “If you’re breaking up with me at least have the balls to tell me you fucking coward.” And that was how we broke up. I’m still a little bitter to this day. But instead of prom I went to VEISHA and had a great time. And he and I ended up getting back together when he came crawling back on my doorstep to tell me he was sorry. I tended to break up and get back together with boyfriends a lot back in the day.
2. Do you still talk to your first love? I think my first love was a guy named Bob. He was four years older than me. I met him when I was a sophomore in high school and he was out of school. He drove a mustang. I didn’t even have a driver’s license. He used to pick me up from school. I thought I was so cool with my older boyfriend who drove a brand new mustang. Until he totaled that mustang just weeks before I got my driver’s license in a drunk driving accident. We dated off and on for two years. He spent that whole two years still being in love with his ex-girlfriend. That kind of put a damper on our relationship. Plus I was young and wanted to tramp it up a little. So we split up when I was senior in high school. We still talked for a while until he moved to New York. But I haven’t talked to him in about fifteen years. And I’m ok with that.
3. What was your first alcoholic drink? Like not a sip? Holy cow. Who can remember what their first alcoholic drink was? That was so long ago. It was either beer, a wine cooler or a fuzzy navel. I drank a lot of all of those back in the day. After high school there was a lot of beer, Purple Passion and Mad Dog.
4. What was your first job? My very first job was the summer between my junior and senior year in high school. My mom’s company was opening a new office in Piscataway, NJ (near where my mom lived). I was in charge of the office. I answered the phone, scheduled lunch meetings, made copies and unpacked boxes. Most days I was the only person there. It was so boring. I quit after just a couple weeks. I’m pretty sure my mom wasn’t to thrilled with my decision, but I couldn’t stand the boredom anymore.
5. What was your first car? The first car I drove was a 1979 Chevette. It was the car my parents bought together when I was about four-years-old. By the time I got it the floor was so rusted out it was gone. My dad put a garbage can lid on the floor with the floor mat over it. On my way to get my senior pictures taken I went through a puddle that splashed up through the floor and soaked my clothes. I had to throw my clothes in the dryer when I got the studio. The first car I owned was a black Ford Taurus with red interior. Within a year the transmission went out. I forked over a couple hundred dollars for a re-built transmission. Then a few months after that I tried to miss a skunk in the road and accidentally rolled the car in to a ditch and totaled it.
6. Who was the first person to text you today? I hardly ever send or receive texts. So nobody sent me a text today. Yesterday Pat sent me a text after I accidentally texted him while I was in school. I was trying to delete and somehow texted him. Clearly I need to have some teenager teach me about this whole texting thing.
7. Who is the first person you thought of this morning? I guess it would be Keaton because he woke me up to remind me of his conference after school. But I went back to sleep after that. Then the first thing I thought of when I got out of bed at quarter to nine was that I have a call at 9am.
8. Who was your first grade teacher? Mrs. Cooper. I had a Mrs. Cooper for first grade and another Mrs. Cooper for third grade. I don’t remember much about either of them other than their names.
9. Where did you go on your first ride on an airplane? I was around seven or eight the first time I flew in an airplane. My mom had moved out East. I think she was in Maryland at first, but she also lived in Pennsylvania and New Jersey so I can’t remember which was first. I went to visit her for the summer. My dad and I flew together because my parents didn’t want me to fly by myself the very first time I flew. I then flew four times a year to visit my mom for Spring Break and summer vacation until I graduated from high school.
10. Who was your first best friend, and are you still friends with him/her? I had a couple best friends when I was in elementary school. One of my best friends was Karline. She was really cute with blonde hair. We went to school together. I haven’t spoken to her since I moved away before fifth grade. My other best friend was Laurie. We lived near each other. She lived in a housing development right behind the apartments I lived in. She moved to Illinois when I was in third grade and she was in fourth. I was devastated, but we kept in touch. She was Maid of Honor when Lee and I renewed our vows. I don’t talk to her much anymore, but we do catch each other every couple of months on IM.
11. What was your first sport played? I took ballet when I was in elementary school. I’ve always been a very, very clumsy person which is evident by the scrape I have on my pinky finger today when I stretched and scraped my finger on my desk. Yes, I am that accident-prone. Were you not convinced by the fact that I broke two toes? But I never participated in any sports other than playing tennis with my friend Rachel in high school or soccer in the yard with my kids.
12. Where was your first sleepover? Oh crap. I have no clue. When I was in elementary school there was a group of us girls who were great friends. It was me, Karline, Jenny, Robin and Tracy. We spent the night at each other’s house all the time. I also spent the night at my friend, Laurie’s house pretty often. My mom and dad both read this blog so maybe they know where I had my first sleepover and they can tell us in the comments.
13. Who was the first person you talked to today? Keaton when he came in about the conference. But does it count when you are still three-quarters asleep. Otherwise it would be Teri since she was the first person to join my 9am call.
14. Whose wedding were you in the first time? I was a junior bride’s maid in my dad’s second wedding. Like usual, we were late to the rehearsal. I get my chronic tardiness from my dad. But we made it to the wedding on time.
15. What was the first thing you did this morning? Once I finally dragged my butt out of bed I headed down to my office to get on my conference call. I know. Not very exciting.
16. What was the first concert you ever went to? My dad tried to get me tickets to Bon Jovi when I was in high school, but they sold out within just a couple hours. I was so bummed. Luckily I got to see Jon Bon Jovi four years ago. The first concert I actually went to was Boyz II Men. I was eighteen. Necole and I drove an hour and a half to see them. Then a few days later somebody won tickets on the radio so I went again with my friend, Candy, and my cousin, April. Candy left her purse under the front seat in my black Ford Taurus and while we were in the concert somebody broke my passenger side window and stole her purse. We went back to the stadium to call the police. We worked at US Cellular and had cell phones (big ol’ bag phones) but I must have left mine at home. There was a long line at the payphones and Candy got in to a fight with some girl over the phone. It almost came to blows.
17. What was your first tattoo or piercing? I wanted to get my ears pierced so badly, but my stepmom wouldn’t let me until I was sixteen or something. (I would like to add that my sister has had her ears pierced for years and now has her nose and lip pierced too. My stepmom took her to get her lip pierced for her seventeenth birthday in January. Not that I’m bitter or anything.) However, on a trip to New York my mom took me to get my ears pierced. The guy who pierced my ears didn’t even take time to get off the phone. He just chatted away as he shot an earring in each ear. I now have three piercings in my left ear and two in my right. You already know about my tattoo.
18. What was the first foreign country you went to? The summer before my senior year in high school my mom and I went to Cancun. We spent a week at Club Med in Cancun. It rocked. I had so much fun. I can’t really tell you about it though because like I said, my mom and dad read this blog. Since then the only other foreign country I’ve been to is the UK when my mom took Keaton and I to London in 2005.
19. What was your first run-in with the law? We’ve already discussed my first run-in with the law when I told you I was arrested for shoplifting in high school. My second brush with the law was when I was arrested for assault because I threw paper at a guy. I’m such a rebel.
20. When was your first detention? I was a perfect angel in school. I never got a detention. But there was one time I was pulled in to the associate principals office for leaving campus. We weren’t allowed to leave campus for anything. But Necole and I skipped second period every day anyway. We both were TAing that period so we weren’t skipping class. One day we got caught and the associate principals pulled us in to their offices to yell at us. We were just a few months from graduation. I lost my temper and told the dude, “Fine I’ll just drop out then.” He got my counselor involved who told him I was way ahead in credits and graduating with honors. Don’t worry. I didn’t drop out. I did walk across the stage with my class with my honors medal dangling from my neck as I shook that butthead’s hand and accepted my diploma.
21. What was the first state you lived in? I was born in Iowa and it’s the only state I’ve ever lived in. Although I spent my summers in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey or California with my mom.
22. Who was the first person to break your heart? My first love, Bob. We were seeing each other for a few weeks, but he would never let me in his room. He lived right down the street from me so I was over at his house all the time. Finally I snuck in his room and saw his walls covered with “I Love Kara” posters and notes. Kara was his ex. I broke up with him and went home. I remember crying in the hallway on my way to my room when I passed my brother. He was around three-years-old, but he could tell I need a hug. He stopped me and wrapped his little arms around me. It was so sweet. And as you know from above, Bob and I got back together and dated for another two years after that.
23. Who was your first roommate? My first roommates were my two roommates in college. I have no clue what their names were. I wasn’t in college long enough to form a big bond with them. Then Lee and I lived together for a while until we split up when I was pregnant with Keaton. Then my next roommate was Necole when we got an apartment together for a few months shortly after Keaton was born. My next roommate was Lee and he’s been my roommate ever since.
24. Where did you go on your first limo ride? I think my first limo ride was when Lee and I got married in Vegas. [At least I think. Necole can probably keep me honest here because I would have been in a limo with her. I can't remember if we road in a limo for any bachelorette parties or not.] The next limo ride was for Lori’s thirtieth birthday. A bunch of us girls rode around in a limo to a bunch of different bars. It was a blast. We totally need to do that again.

#9 — it was NJ … we all went to the Jersey shore; that was the first out of state place. Then came Maryland, then CA, then back to NJ ….
#5 — are you sure it was a Ford Taurus? I remember you having a black Geo Metro (though don’t think that was the one you rolled. But, I didn’t remember you having a Taurus…
When did Pennsylvania fit in to the mix? Didn’t you own a townhouse or something in Pennslyvania?
Your right. It wasn’t a Taurus. It was a Tempo. My mind is going with old age. I didnt’ have it long with all the problems above. I got the Geo Metro after I totaled the Tempo. I bought that Metro brand spanking new for like $10. Ok, it was a little more than $10, but it was cheap.

Ah … I worked in Maryland, but lived in Pennsylvania. So they go together. I randomly pick one or the other to describe where I was
I remember the Metro… I believe I traded you a Saturn for it … my loss
Your almost prom date? I hate him.
dawn’s last blog post..FYI: Are you raising Jewish kids?
If this posts twice I apologize - my computer sucks!
I never knew you had a Flintstone’s mobile too. Where if you wanted to you could put your feet through the floor board and operate the vehicle that way. I did too. It was a ‘78 Ford Pinto - my first car. I would get splashed in flooded intersections too. I always had to lift my feet on the way through or I’d get soaked. It did come in handy though if you didn’t want to get caught drinking something you should be drinking. HA. Not that I would know.
Oh and I mis-read about the limo ride on my b-day. I thought it said my thirteenth birthday. I was like, “I don’t remember that. I didn’t even know her then.” HA.

Vegas? You got married in Vegas? Me too! Small world, eh? What more do we have in common!?
We tied the knot at The Little White Chapel … in 1998. And we took a limo too!
