The girl with black hair (or lessons adults can learn from kids)

Oh, I almost forgot. In other concert news…

On our way to the school last night Caleb was telling me where he would be standing. He said, “I’m on the second row. On the top. So there is one row and then two rows. And that’s where I am.” I’m glad he clarified that because I never would have known where the second row from the top was otherwise.

Then he started shaking his right hand, “and I’m on this side.”

“Ok,” I said. “I got it. You’re on the right side of the gym on the second row from the top. I’ll find you.”

Apparently he thought I would still have trouble finding him because he said, “If you see a girl with black hair, I’m right next to her.”

“Who is that?” I asked.

“Natalie.”

“Ah, Natalie has black hair?”

“Yep. Well it’s kind of black and brown, but it’s really black.” he clarified.

“Ok, got it.”

As the kids walked out to the risers to stand and sing I immediately found Caleb. And right next to him was Natalie. Natalie not only has black hair, but she is African-American. I felt a little bit of pride as I realized Caleb was describing her to me not by the color of her skin, but rather by other characteristics (the color of her hair). We live in White People Land so there isn’t a lot of color at the school. But Caleb doesn’t even really see it that way. He just sees her as another girl in his class who happens to have black hair. And that is just awesome.

  1. Awesome, indeed!

  2. Children are so pure. What a great example of how the world should be.
