My baby is six

Yesterday was Caleb’s sixth birthday. Six years ago yesterday was Mother’s Day. And I was in labor All. Day. Long. Caleb was born at 11:50pm. But it was worth every minute.

I know I say this every year. And for all of the kids’ birthdays. But I just cannot believe he is six already. About a month ago the kids were watching old videos. In fact they were obsessed with them and watched them every night for about a week. It was so funny to see them all as babies and toddlers. My how they’ve grown.

I tried to get an earlier flight out of Chicago so I could be back by the time the kids got out of school, but it wasn’t meant to be. Instead we got home around 5:30pm. Lee and Caleb picked us up from the airport. We got Keaton from school where he had just finished up his soccer game. Then we dropped of the big boys and headed for Toys ‘R Us.

I told Caleb we were going to get his birthday present. He said, “I can’t see my birthday present.” So I told him to close his eyes then.

I had a hold of one hand and Skyler had a hold of the other. Lee covered Caleb’s eyes as we guided him to the bike section. Miraculously we got him there without slamming him in to any poles or knocking him in to a shelf or anything.

When we got to the bike aisle, Lee removed his hands and we said, “Ta da.” Caleb looked at us as if to say, “What the…?” I said, “We’re getting you a bike. And you get to pick it out.”

At first he picked a bike that looked like a motorcycle. It was pretty cool, but the seat wasn’t adjustable. So we moved on.

Then he picked a Hummer bike. It was awesome.

Caleb's new bike

He test drove a couple of other bikes, but in the end decided on the Hummer bike. I’m with him. It’s an awesome bike.

I paid for the bike and started to walk out of the store. But Caleb wasn’t done. “Come on mom. I want to show you something.” I said, “But we have to go to pick-up to get your bike.” He didn’t care. He HAD to show me something.

He literally dragged me over to the Indiana Jones toys. Caleb is obsessed with these little “guys.” He has every Marvel Super Hero in this two inch size and now he wanted the Indiana Jones guys. And the Iron Man guys. It was his birthday so I bought them all for him. What can I say? I’m such a sucker.

We paid for the “guys,” picked up the bike and went home.

We bought a cookie ice cream cake from Schwan’s last week. I put six candles in it (because we have candles now).

After dinner and dessert Lee put Caleb’s bike together. Caleb got to stay up a half hour past bedtime so he could ride his new bike. He was a little leary at first as he tried to get used to it. Riding it in the store was a little different then trying to ride it on our big hill. But he figured it out. I can’t wait to take all the kids out to the trail for some family biking.

Riding his bike

I think he had a pretty good birthday. He spent the whole day with a huge smile plastered on his face. He knew it was his day and all about him. He’s just too cute for words.
