Why are men so darn stubborn?

Lee hasn’t been to the doctor in years. He basically has to be on his deathbed before he’ll even consider having a conversation with a doctor. I usually end up having to drag him to the emergency room with a 104 degree temperature and delirium because he’s to stubborn to go to the doctor sooner.

For months and months, well over a year in fact, Lee has had a very touchy stomach. It’s not uncommon for me to hear him vomiting in the bathroom before bed. I can’t tell you how enjoyable that sound is. You can tell by his big gut he’s not anorexic so it’s obviously something else. I’ve been trying to get him to see the doctor for a long time, but he refuses to go.

Last week he woke up with an unbearable pain in his back. Apparently it was so bad it brought him to tears. [I didn't hear a thing because I'm that heavy of a sleeper.] And the pain lasted for several hours.

The next morning he was telling me about it and we were trying to figure out what it was. Maybe his kidneys? We weren’t sure.

In the early afternoon he went in to the bathroom to pee. [By the way, I should probably mention you should not eat while reading this post.] He brought out a cup of his pee so I could see it. [Now that's true love when your husband brings you a cup of his pee.] It was rust color. He had blood in his urine. I quickly diagnosed him with kidney stones (you know with my very scientific degree in business administration).

That was it. I was making a doctor appointment for him and would literally drag him to the office if I had to. I happened to have a checkup appointment that day. [I'm in the office so much I'm pretty much putting my doctor's kids through college with my asthma, sinusitis, OCD, ADD and fatigue issues.] So I called the office and asked them if Lee could come in my place. They happened to have an opening later in the day so we were both able to go to the doctor.

My appointment was first. We discussed my fatigue and then I moved on to discussing Lee. I told our doctor that Lee was coming in with what I thought was kidney stones. I also told him to ask Lee about his vomiting because I was sure Lee wouldn’t mention it.

Lee went about an hour later. Sure enough he didn’t tell the doctor about his vomiting. But our doctor did ask him about it. Lee just kind of blew it off. They scheduled a CT scan for the next morning to check for stones and Lee was off.

Yesterday the office called to tell Lee they saw some stones in the scan. They set up an appointment with a urologist to discuss his next move.

Today the office called again. Since I mentioned the vomiting, our doctor ordered some blood work in addition to the CT scan. The blood work came back today. His thyroid is borderline and he has a bad bug in his stomach. He has helicobacter pylori. It can cause ulcers and sometimes cancer.

See. Who was right? I was right. Who is stubborn? Lee is stubborn. And now he’s taking four big horse pill every morning and four more big horse pills every night for the next two weeks. Men!

  1. Who would of thought getting kidney stones would be a good thing? In this case though, I’m glad Lee finally has a diagnosis. Hopefully he wont wait till he has a heart attack to find out that he has a bladder infection. LOL

C’s last blog post..Long time, No post!!!

  2. Gotta love our stubborn men! Mine is just as bad. He told me about two weeks ago that he is really glad his new diet is helping with the heartburn, to which I said, “What heartburn?” You know, the kind that is so bad you think you’re having a heart attack? Yeah, that kind.

How is your water situation up there?

  3. Oh how I can relate to this. My husband never wants to go to the doctor. He went to the doctor recently for a strange patch on his arm (after I MADE him) and they said it was pre-cancerous. However, the doctor never even looked over the rest of his body - hello? Did you ask your doctor to look over both arms and your back where the skin looks exactly the same? No… Sigh. I said, “Phone. Now. Call.” Men….
Glad you guys found out what was wrong though - that is the first step! Hope he feels better soon!
