Growing up right before my eyes

We’ve spent a lot of time at the pool this summer. We got pool passes and dang it we’re going to use them.

In June we went to Chicago to visit my mom. While the kids were doing their very favorite activity ever in Chicago…swimming in the pool at Grandma’s apartment… (I know, you’d think it would be Navy Pier or Shedd’s Aquarium or even Great America. Nope. Their favorite thing is Grandma’s pool.) So anyway, while in the pool at Grandma’s house, Caleb got brave enough to swim on his own…without a noodle or holding on for dear life to either the edge of the pool or a family member. By the second day he had this swimming thing down. He wasn’t an Olympic swimmer or anything, but he got from point A to point B and he was pretty darn proud of himself.

When we got home and headed back out to our city pool he kept at it. Every day he went a little bit farther in to the deep end, practicing his new swimming skills. He’s gotten pretty darn good at it.

He’s been wanting to slide down the water slides at the pool, but you have to be so tall and he’s about an inch too short. Lee keeps telling him he needs to drink his milk every day so he’ll grow. So he’s been downing his milk and every day we are at the pool he goes to measure himself…just in case that milk has made him grow that extra half inch yet. So far no such luck.

But there is a drop slide and a diving board in the deep end. You don’t have to be a certain height to use those. For those you just need to pass the deep end test that the lifeguards make you take. This deep end test just requires them to swim the width of the pool, back and forth. Caleb took the test and passed. At just six-years-old. I’m so proud of him.

Here he is at the top of the drop slide making sure the kid before him was out of the way.

Almost to the edge.

Almost to edge

He’s such a big kid now!

My younger son was a late bloomer with the brave swimming. It was the HUGEST deal when he was finally doing his own thing in the water. I don’t think he’ll ever be a strong swimmer, but at least now he can play, knows his limitations (like how long he can tread over his head) and I don’t worry about him drowning himself.

    Congrats on your milestone!

Not only big kid he is, but also brave:) I am always afraid of falling down, deep into the water (my swimming is poor), so it looks like a miracle to me when kids are not afraid of such things…
