I Fought Vonage and I Won
You may remember I had some issues with Vonage following my disconnection on July 7th. The gist of it is that I disconnected at the start of my billing cycle so Vonage had no right to take a monthly payment for July.
I went back and forth with Customer Care (and I use that term “care” only because that’s what they call themselves, but not at all what they actually do) several times to no avail.
Then I opened a Better Business Bureau claim where I went back and forth with some girl named Denise three times.
In her first response, she said they had every right to take a payment because I disconnected on July 20th and it’s in their terms of service that they don’t give refunds for partial months.
I responded by letting her know that, no I did not disconnect on the 20th. I disconnected on the 7th and would be happy to send her proof of that from my new carrier.
She responded and basically said, “Too bad so sad. I’m not even going to dignify your response with an answer. I already made my peace with my first response.” Of course, she said it slightly different, but that’s basically what she meant.
I responded with, “Nice try there buddy, but you’re still wrong. I disco’ed on the 7th. I can prove it. You’re company is a thieving, lying piece of trash.” Again, I worded it slightly different, but I did use the word “thief” in my response.
I figured it would just end there and it would be another unsatisfied BBB claim of which Vonage has many. But to my surprise I received an email from Vonage that stated they were refunding me $30.57; the amount they stole from me on July 7th. I was so shocked I almost fell out of my chair.
Then I got Denise’s final BBB response. She stated she still thinks she’s right and they had every right to steal that $30.57 in the first place, but out of the goodness of her heart she refunded me $30.57 anyway.
Oh, Denise. Thanks for returning my money. But your apology was a little less than, well, apologetic. Whatever. I have my money back. I will never be a Vonage customer ever again. And life is good.

OMG, even when Denise is wrong she’s right. Can you imagine being married to that?

Can you file a BBB claim against the BBB??
Glad you got your money back. Ugh. I *hate* dealing with things like that.

Yay!
Isn’t it amazing that these companies grudgingly give in because they realize you’re right but don’t want to actually admit they’re wrong?
It’s too bad because I recently read a book on customer service that says that studies show that a company who makes a mistake, admits it, and fixes it right away actually produces more loyalty from customers than those who never experience a problem in the first place.
In other words, making mistakes can be good for business – if you take care of it in a positive way.
