Why do organizations need to be such drama queens?
Speaking of organizations that clearly need to hire better PR people…
Planned Parenthood of Eastern Iowa opened a clinic in Dubuque, Iowa today. As expected there were several Right to Life protesters picketing out front. But Planned Parenthood of Eastern Iowa doesn’t provide abortions. They don’t provide abortions at any of their three clinics in Eastern Iowa. They provide birth control, annual gynecological exams, pregnancy testing, STD testing and treatment and sex and reproduction education. They also will refer girls to a clinic that does provide abortions. And that’s what has Right to Life’s panties in a wad.
Dubuque Right To Life said, “We are saddened that Planned Parenthood will be preying upon the vulnerable youth of dubuque [sic], as well as the Tri-State area, all for the almighty dollar. It is only appropriate that they are opening on a dark and dreary day.”
“…preying upon the vulnerable youth…”
Seriously?!? One of the protesters interviewed by the Dubuque news said she was out there because her aunt had three abortions and was very depressed about it. THREE ABORTIONS! I’m missing why this girl was out there protesting against Planned Parenthood. It sounds to me like this girl’s aunt is in desperate need of Planned Parenthood. Maybe if Planned Parenthood had been there to give her birth control she wouldn’t have needed to have three abortions.
People seem to have lost focus on what Planned Parenthood does for their community. Giving referrals (remember it’s just referrals…not actual abortions in our community) is such a small part of what Planned Parenthood does. [And on a side note, your OB GYN will likely give you a referral for an abortion as well, if you ask. I'm just saying.] Planned Parenthood provides services that many teen girls are too embarrassed to ask their parents about or low-income families can’t afford. Planned Parenthood will give a woman a yearly pap smear which could help save her from cancer. Planned Parenthood will treat a teenager’s STD so she doesn’t continue to live with an STD causing much more harm. Planned Parenthood will give a woman birth control so she doesn’t have to have three abortions. Planned Parenthood will talk to teens and answer their questions when the teen is too ashamed to ask their mom.
I’m all for Dubuque Right to Life educating their community about the dangers of abortion, but do they have to be so melodramatic? “…preying upon the vulnerable youth...” Could they be any more of a drama queen? I lose a little respect for organizations who attack others to try to further their cause.

People give places like PP a bad rap. I started using them back when I was in high school. Not for abortions, but for birth control. When so many insurance companies out there don’t pay for birth control pills, yet so many of us WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE WITH OUR BODIES, I went to them. because I could get a month’s supply for $9.75. That was the highest price you could pay for them, and it was income-based. I know there were some people that qualified to get them FREE.
It’s funny the same people that fight the welfare crisis with so many people “poppin’ out kids” are a lot of the time the sames people that are complaining about PP and their efforts.
Great post.

Planned Parenthood never gets airtime for their preventative services and the education they offer so people can make GOOD choices about their sexual health.
Thank you for your common sense post!

Nice post Christine – I am a huge fan of Planned Parenthood. I have never had an abortion, but have used many of the services of PP. I too used them for check ups and birth control when I was young and financially strapped.
I find it ironic that one of the complaints was that PP does all this for the “all for the almighty dollar”. Given their sliding scale fees and support for all woman regardless of their financial status, I really don’t believe that the all might dollar is their primary concern. And, given the danger that doctors and support staff face in working at PP with all the kooks that are gunning for them, I think that their motivation is far more altruistic!!

I wonder why these protesters don’t go after insurance companies as well. Many large well known companies will cover an abortion and NOT for medical reasons. On top of that, many of these same insurance companies require a physician referral which in some cases would be a family doctor, not an OB-GYN. Granted those doctors can refuse the referral based on beliefs but the insurance company will STILL cover the abortion.
I am happy that there is freedom of speech but it seems to me that those protesting never know or express the whole truths of what they are protesting. They focus on one item no matter how small.

Oh yeah, I meant to mention that too. Planned Parenthood is a non-profit organization. They don’t do anything for the almighty dollar. Their employees aren’t driving sports cars and living in million dollar houses. They do what they do so young girls and low-income families can have the support and tools that they need. They are in business to support their communities. Not to make money.
