The great garage debate
Lee and I have a great marriage. We spend time together. We laugh together. It’s almost perfect.
Except for one thing.
There is this nagging issue that we just can’t get past. A hurdle we just can’t get over. A hill we just can’t climb.
And that is…
Which side of the garage is the front and which side is the back.
And now, not only is Lee totally wrong. But he’s dragged Keaton in to this whole mess.
Last night Keaton told me he parked his bike in front of the garage. But he really meant the back of the garage.
Let me explain. With a visual.

Our house (like most people’s houses) faces the street. Then (again, like most houses) we have a backyard. On the other side of our backyard is our garage which faces the alley out back.
Lee says the front of the garage is the side facing the street (or backyard as the case may be) and the back is the side facing the alley. I know what you’re thinking. Clearly he is wrong.
I say the front of the garage is the side with the big moving door in which you open to drive your car in to the garage (or the side facing the alley). The back is the side that is attached to the backyard; hence the word “back.”
What do you think? Me. Give me your honest opinion. Me. Who’s right? Me.

Okay, let me preface this answer by saying that after I looked at your drawing I knew MY answer.
The front of the garage is the side facing the ALLEY. Especially if it is the side with the garage door.
Sorry Lee.

Of course you’re right. The front of the garage is wherever the big doors are that you open to put your car in. Duh.
So if the kid is putting his bike in front of the garage, well, then I’m gonna run over it with my Toyota.

I can definitely see both sides. Your setup is EXACTLY the same as my in-laws. In their case, I think the front is the side facing the backyard only because that’s where the door is. Their garage has since been converted into an art studio, and there is no longer a big door for driving through, only a small entry door that is located closest to the house (which makes sense).
But in YOUR case . . . the front is wherever the door is that allows you to drive in your car, so clearly your husband is wrong.
Of course you’re right.
Even if you thought the front was really the back … you’d still be right.
Hello? We’re ALWAYS right.

Definitely the side with the door you drive into!

The front of the garage would be the side you pull your car into. You don’t pull into the BACK of your garage. You pull into the front door. Right?

The front of the garage is the side with the big door that rolls up and that you drive into with your car. You hubbie is way off! Sorry.

I am with the majority (sorry, Lee). The front of the garage is obviously the part with the big door that opens and you drive your car thru. Its the front, regardless of whether the garage opens on to the street or the alley.

I think it is widely accepted that the front of anything contains the entrance to that thing. Thus, teh front of the garage must be on the side of the garage containing the door. Sorry Lee.

If I was told to meet at the front of the garage, I would wait in front of the large door. If your garage were like my neighbors’ garage, unattached, but with a driveway alongside the backyard and with the big door facing the street same as the house does, then I would side with your husband. If I were in the car, in the garage, then I would expect to drive out from the front of the garage.

I agree with you (and apparently everyone else who commented - although I am still wrapping my brain around the last analogy). Anyway, where the big door is that you drive through is the front of the garage. Now I can see where Lee may have become misguided…(stay with me here)…if you have items stored infront of your vehicles (aka bikes) then he may think this makes it the front of the garage…things being infront of the vehicles. Alas, he is still wrong.

I am no with Lee. But Jason is with you.
Clearly you are right. I can’t see their side of it even a little bit. This might call for divorce.
