Do you think is what she meant by suffering?
Nine years ago I was standing as Maid of Honor at my best friend’s [first] wedding when the preacher said something that almost made me burst out laughing. She was going on about suffering and how each partner had to suffer a little. I have no idea what she was babbling about but she asked my friend and her soon-to-be [but now ex-] husband, “Have you suffered?” I thought, what the hell kind of question is that on somebody’s wedding day?
But today, as Lee and I celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary, we experienced a different kind of suffering. [Well at least Lee did. I don't think it hurt at all.] We got tattoos.
I got a vine in the shape of a heart with our wedding date across the side.

Lee got our zodiac signs (Gemini for me, Taurus for him) intermingled with the Gemini in red since that’s my favorite color.

They are on our legs, just above our ankles. Mine’s on my right leg. Lee’s is on his left leg.
This was my second tattoo, but it’s Lee’s first. He was a tattoo virgin, but now he’s popped his proverbial tattoo cherry. Oh I could go on with the virgin jokes, but I’ll stop there.
I was able to watch Lee through the whole thing. He sat very still, but he grimaced and pursed his lips and even clamped his eyes shut a few times. And like any good wife…I laughed at him.
But even though it hurt, I think Lee’s quite happy with his very first tattoo. And I love mine.
