Who knew seeing would be so expensive?
Like many moms, I don’t always take very good care of myself. The kids go to the pediatric dentist every 6 months. Me? It’s been a couple years. And I’m a little ashamed to admit how long it’s been since I visited by gynecologist. And I haven’t been to the eye doctor since 2004. Yeah, I know. I need to start taking time for me and working on my health. And I’m starting with an eye appointment.
My vision insurance allows me to get new glasses every two years. But it’s been much longer than that since I got my last pair. Like more than a decade. [I told you I spend very little time and money on me.]
This summer Lee found my decade-old glasses in the kids’ room. Minus one of the lenses. I rarely wear my glasses. Really only when I take my contacts out to clean them (which should be weekly, but I don’t think I need to tell you I never follow those guidelines). The last couple times I cleaned my contacts I had to roam around the house seeing everything as big blurs of color. It’s been so annoying.
So on Friday I had my first eye appointment in years. And my prescription changed (at least in one eye). So it was a perfect time to buy new glasses. [As opposed to popping my old lens back in and taping the old glasses together a la Poindexter.]
My eye doctor introduced me to the eye glass salesman. He walked me over to a huge wall of frames. I was a little overwhelmed by all of the choices. I hate shopping. And glasses shopping is no better. I should have brought a friend to help me decide. My only criteria was cheap. [I guess that explains a lot about my wardrobe.]
I finally settled on a small pair. I honestly can barely remember what they look like. I tend to have short-term memory loss after traumatic events in my life. And once I saw my final bill (after insurance even) it became a traumatic event. Wholly hairy donkey balls, glasses are expensive. No wonder I don’t replace them every 2 years. No wonder I wait until old fashions become new again before I invest in a pair. And I mean invest. It’s like buying a new car. There should be a payment plan.
These better be some damn good glasses. They better last me at least another 10 years.

A friend of mine at work gave me a wesbite where those same glasses would probably have cost you less than $20. I’ll have to send it to you….just in case you want to replace sooner than 10 years.
