She deserved it? Really?!?
Jan 9, 2009 A day in our life, Randomness
I was skimming TMZ earlier today (on my break, of course) when I came across a video of a woman who was beaten by a police officer while being detained for DUI back in 2007. [I'll warn you, while you don't see the worst of it because the cop presumably shut off the camera, the video is very graphic and disturbing.]
But it isn’t so much the video that has me feeling disgusted. We’ve seen police brutality before so while it’s despicable and horrifying, it’s no longer all that shocking. That’s not to say that police brutality has become the norm, because the majority of police officers are upstanding and brave people doing their jobs and doing it well without beating suspects. But I guess we’ve become a little desensitized to media stories like this.
What really disturbed me about this story is some of the comments. Comments like…
If the cops would beat up ALL the losers that act like fools, there might be less stupid behavior.
GOOOOO COPS!
Police officers are supposed to protect and serve their community. You are supposed to feel like you can trust your police officers. They are supposed to be somebody you can go to for help. Beating the shit out of some 130 pound drunk woman isn’t exactly providing that service.
Was this woman cooperating with the officer? No. Was she belligerent? Yes. Should she face consequences for her actions? Absolutely. Did she deserve to be beaten so badly she had to be carried off to the hospital in a stretcher? Hell no.
She was drunk and unruly, like drunk people often are. Drunk people are annoying and frustrating. Drunk people don’t listen. Drunk people don’t do what their told. Drunk people tend to get something in their head (like wanting to make their phone call) and focus solely on that. I don’t know this woman, but I would venture to say that when she’s sober she likely would follow an officer’s requests without incident.
But when you’re drunk you don’t always do the sane, respectable thing. She needed to be locked in a room until she sobered up or calmed down or both. Not thrown against a wall and who knows what else that ended with her blood pooling on the floor in the middle of an interrogation room. Clearly there are better ways to handle a crazy, drunk person.
It really makes me sad that people would even think things like “she deserved it because she wouldn’t listen.” I really hope these same people don’t have children because I can only imagine what their sometimes unruly and often disrespectful teenagers deserve. Beating somebody bloody isn’t the solution.
