All of a sudden this is a fitness blog
Feb 10, 2009 A day in our life, Randomness
I’ve been trying to come up with ways to spice up my workouts. Walking on the treadmill is good and all, but sometimes a girl needs a little variety. Plus I need to work out some other muscles besides just my legs.
So I decided to give Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred a try. I love Jillian on The Biggest Loser. She kicks some serious bootay and makes people cry. That’s exactly the kind of motivation I need to keep moving. But watching her from the couch while I down a big bowl of pasta and wash it down with a Squirt is totally different from actually working out with her.
If you are unfamiliar with 30 Day Shred, it’s a measly 20 minute workout. Surely I could workout for just 20 minutes. I’m on the treadmill for 45 minutes. Twenty minutes would be nothing.
Yeah right.
Jillian tells you to keep moving the whole 20 minutes. You do a several sets; a few minutes of strength training, 2 minutes of cardio and a minute of abs…continually moving the whole time. And she has us doing old school things like push ups, jumping jacks, and crunches. Things I did in gym class in junior high. Things that should be so easy for me.
But it is so deceiving. By the second set I was gasping for breath and cursing at my 5 pound hand weights.
Later that night I could barely raise my arms to wash my armpits in the shower. Yesterday the simple act of resting my arms on my laptop to type was making me cringe in pain. Today? All I can do is crawl in to the fetal position and cry big crocodile tears.
Dude. My arms. They hurt. And my thighs? Burning.
And all I did was Level 1. There is a level 2. And a level 3.
And if that wasn’t embarrassing enough I was reading through some of the reviews on Amazon and a bunch of people are all like “I barely felt a burn” and “It was way to easy and boring.” Seriously?!? I’m really starting to worry about my level of wimpiness.

Agreed–this DVD is incredibly challenging! But I love the fact that it kicks my butt in only 20 minutes. It saves a lot of time while still giving me a great workout!

I did something like this a couple of years ago. It was a 6 week program and it really pushed me the whole time. You will be really surprised how quickly you gain strength – the first week is always a bummer. Good Luck.

Must be something in the water right now for moms feeling like they need to get fit. I’m going through this fitness phase too. So, of course, I thought I’d try to go all out and do a crazy fitness program called P90X that I saw on an infomercial. It’s kicking my behind. It’s 90 days of pain and ache. Hang in there!
