Nobody makes fun of my valentine
Feb 13, 2009 A day in our life
Earlier tonight we were going through our evening routine. The kids brought their school bags to me so I could sign their agendas and go through their take home folders. I opened up Caleb’s agenda and saw a note from his teacher. Uh Oh. She rarely leaves a note unless it’s something bad.
She said, “Please see behavior form in Caleb’s blue folder.” Oh no. Not again.
According to the form Caleb tried to kick a friend today.
I asked, “Which friend did you kick?”
“Alicia. But I didn’t kick her. I just tried to kick her.”
“Why would you try to kick her?”
He burst in to tears. “She was making fun of something I made for you,” he said between sobs.
My heart just broke as he continued. “I worked really hard on it. It’s a valentine for you,” he sniffled. And he pulled the valentine out of his bag.
Then I wanted to kick her. How could anybody make fun of this sweet little boy and his cute valentine?
But as much as I wanted to tell him “atta boy,” I got it together and told him he should never, ever hit or kick somebody. And we had a little discussion about mean kids and walking away. Followed by a big hug and kiss as I wiped away his tears. This parenting gig is sure hard sometimes.

Darn! You brought tears to my eyes!! How sweet that Caleb cared so much about what he was making for you. I feel like kicking Alicia too
But, you did good in teaching him a lesson about walking away. And, building his confidence that his efforts are appreciated and his work is excellent from your perspective even if someone else is cutting it down. Good lessons to learn young.
So when are you putting a picture of the valentine online
