Vacation FAIL!

For the last several years we’ve spent Easter with my mom. So it’s not like it’s a last minute decision or anything. But, yet, each year I wait until the last minute to get ready and am frantically running around the house like a crazy person. This year was no different.

But this year we did decide to add another bit of excitement. Skyler entered the school Talent Show which happened to be Thursday; the night we were supposed to leave. I worked from home so I could spend the whole day getting laundry done (’cause doesn’t everybody wait until the very last second — as opposed to getting caught up the weekend before — to actually wash the ginormous pile of dirty clothes in hopes that you’ll find something to take on vacation with you?).

As soon as the kids got home Justis threw in a load of his own clothes (since he does is own laundry…and when I say HE does his own laundry I say that in the most liberal sense), Lee ran Spencer out to soccer practice, Skyler got her “costume” on (which was a track suit…she was going for the hip hop look), and I finished up working.

After the Talent Show we headed home to pack. [I know, sane, organized people would pack the night before so they didn't have to rush. I however am neither organized or sane. You should know that by now.] I usually make a written note of everything we need to bring. This year I skipped the paper and just kept the list in my head. Mistake #1.

I tried to remember everything. I reminded the kids to bring underwear and their toothbrushes and their swimsuits. (My mom’s apartment complex and it’s the kids’ favorite part of trip. Screw Navy Pier. Or the Field Museum. Or the Brookfield Zoo. It’s all about that indoor pool.] I reminded Keaton and Justis to grab their cell phone charges and their deodorant. I sifted through the sock basket to grab matching socks for everybody. I remembered my makeup, little shampoo and conditioner, and disposable razors. I even remembered to bring my straightening iron.

We got all the suitcases, pillows, blankets, and laptops (we brought 7 freaking laptops…most of which Lee is fixing to sell) and piled in to the car. We were about an hour in to the trip when I decided to get a little comfortable. Getting comfortable means removing my bra. As I was taking it off a lightbulb went off. I FORGOT TO PACK UNDERWEAR! And bras. And my swimsuit. Mistake #2.

So first thing this morning I dragged Lee to the nearest mall so I could hit the Victoria Secret. Since I had no clean underwear I had to go commando. I have some friends who swear by no underwear. I am not one of those. I did not enjoy my jeans rubbing on my girl parts. I couldn’t get underwear on fast enough. I’m actually surprised I didn’t go in to the dressing room after my purchase to put them on right there in the store.

But now, $200 poorer, I have several new pairs of underwear, 2 new bras, and a new swimsuit. It’s expensive being so forgetful.

I never did understand the going commando thing. VERY uncomfortable for me, not to mention rather messy. Undies are one of the best inventions EVER.

Panties are *so* annoying. I simply can’t stand them; won’t wear them. Went to church a few weeks ago (story for another time) and had to dig a pair out of the back of a drawer. My crotch was more uncomfortable than my soul.

Irony: I used to be a lingerie model. Panties were my job.

Fateful twisting: I am continually the bad mommy for making my four-year-old daughter wear panties. The only way she’ll wear them without a fight is if they have a princess on them.
