Sticks and stones — and football — may break my bones, part 2
Nov 3, 2009 The wonderful world of tweens
So when we last left off Spencer had a construction orange cast on, couldn’t play in the big Wisconsin soccer tournament, and went from being a halfback/cornerback in football to an assistant coach. He wasn’t completely sedentary though. Once we got back to Iowa he was able to play in the last four league soccer games. We just had to wrap the cast in foam.
But now he’s a free man again. After three weeks in an itchy, stanky construction orange cast, we went back to the orthopedic surgeon yesterday afternoon to have the cast removed.
As soon as we walked in to the room at the doctor’s office Lee pointed out the saw. “That’s the saw they use to cut off your cast,” he said. Spencer started giggling thinking his dad was just being silly.

Lee grabbed Spencer’s arm said, “Hmmm…I think that blade is longer than your cast is wide. I hope she doesn’t cut in to your arm.” Spencer started to look a little worried, but still kept a smile on his face.

Then the nurse came in and dragged the saw over to Spencer. He gave Lee a look like “holy cow…that really is the saw.” The nurse saw the look on his face and said, “Oh don’t worry. There will only be a little blood.” Spencer was started to get concerned.

Then she started cutting in to one side of the cast. And to Spencer’s relief the blade didn’t even touch his skin. It’s so fun being a parent and getting to torture your children.

Then the nurse had Spencer turn his arm over and she cut the other side open.

When the cutting was over she grabbed a big tool and cracked open the cast. She told Spencer it was just like a nutcracker.

The nutcracker was followed by the scissors. She cut away all the remaining gauze. And Spencer was free. His arm was wrinkly. And smelled sooo bad.

So he rinsed it off before we headed down to x-ray.

The x-rays came back and Spencer is healed. The doctor said he would normally put a kid in a brace for another week or so, but Spencer’s break is completely healed and looks awesome. So no brace. Spencer just needs to take it easy for a while. Luckily he is between sports right now. Indoor soccer doesn’t start until December and basketball doesn’t start until January.
I’m so proud of how well Spencer handled this. He pushed himself and didn’t give up…even though his wrist was broken. He was down right heart broken when he found out he couldn’t play football anymore this year and he couldn’t play in the soccer tournament. But he didn’t complain at all. My little boy is growing up right before my eyes.
