It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it’s what you do with your dancin’ shoes
Tonight was the annual Sock Hop at the elementary school. We go every year and every year I think I should really buy the kids some 50’s garb for this occasion. And yet every year we show up in regular old t-shirts and bootcut jeans.
As we were sitting in the cafeteria chowing down on pizza and sodas I looked around at all the other kids. There were boys in rolled up jeans and rolled up t-shirts wit their hair slicked back. Many of the girls were in poodle skirts and scarves or Pink Ladies costumes. And I was once again thinking about how I should the kids 50’s costumes for the Sock Hop. But then it hit me. This is Skyler & Spencer’s last year in elementary school. Next year they will be in intermediate school.
*sigh* My babies are growing up so fast.
But I pushed that depressing thought out of my head as we shuffled in to the gym for the dancing to begin. They started off the night with the Cha Cha Slide. There was a DJ with a really cool light show so they turned off all the lights.
Have you ever been in a gym with the lights off? A gym with hundreds of people in it? In the dark? Yeah, I had no idea where my kids had gone; lost somewhere in a dark sea of silhouettes. I was picturing kids tripping all over each other and cracking their heads open. A Sock Hop with a side of emergency room. They quickly realized that wasn’t the best idea and turned the lights back on.

The next song was Miley Cyrus’ Party in the U.S.A. By the screaming and screeching that ensued you wouldn’t sworn that Miley Cyrus herself was there to perform live. But no, it was just the excitement of hundreds of elementary school girls getting to dance to their favorite pop stars latest hit. Clearly Miley Cyrus is still a HUGE hit with the under 12 crown. Heck, who am I kidding. I nod my head like yeah and move my hips like yeah when the song comes on in my car.

Caleb was upset because Spencer didn’t want Caleb hanging around with him and his friends. Apparently Spencer thought he and his fourth grade friends were too good to hang out with a mere 2nd grader. So I picked Caleb up off the bleachers and literally dragged him to the dance floor. I was looking forward to some quality time with my blackberry in one of the chairs off to the side, but instead I found myself on the dance floor for almost the entire hour and a half. Caleb and I were hokeying and pokeying, doing the twist, performing the bunny hop and jumping all over the gymnasium floor. It took a while for Caleb to get warmed up but then he was a wild man doing his wild and crazy dancing fool thing. Which gave my old body a chance to sit down and rest.
Then came the Chicken Dance. The DJ had the nerve to tell kids to go get their parents and force them to come to the dance floor. I forced Lee to go out with the kids and shake his groove thing.

In the end we all had a great time. And the good news it wore the kids out. But the bad news is it wore me out too. Jeez nothing like a Sock Hop to make you feel old.

OMG. This sounds like so much fun! I wish our elementary school would do something like this! I’d be great at watching from my chair, too!

I remember going to one of the sock hops with Keaton … several years ago. It was a lot of fun seeing him interact with his friends.
