Puking and Other March Madness Fun
I have been very neglectful of my blog during this March month. Sorry about that. But there has been much mayhem here in our household.
For the first two weeks of the month I worked 24 hours a day. Ok, maybe that’s a small exaggeration, but it sure felt like I was working 24/7. For two weeks straight I was paged every single night but three at 7pm. I was starting to forget what dinner with my family was all about. And prime time TV. What’s that? But things have calmed down a little now. At least where work is concerned.
So just as work is calming down, my family goes to hell in a handbasket. [And what in the world does that saying mean? Where did it originate? Whats a handbasket? Get back to me on that one. Oh, oh, oh...I found it here.]
So anyway, on the 9th Skyler & Spencer had a preschool field trip. We went to the nature center and learned about syrup making. This nice lady showed us how to drill in to a tree and hook up a bag to “catch” sap from the maple tree. Then we went inside and saw them boiling it. It takes an awful lot of sap to make a little bit of syrup. It hardly seems worth it, but it was a lot fun nonetheless. And we got ice cream with syrup on it for a treat, so that was pretty awesome.
So I took that morning off to go to the field trip. I got in to work at 2pm. At 2:35 Lee calls me. The conversation went like this:
LEE: I know you just got to work and all, but how soon can you come home?
ME: Why? (with a hint of irritation)
LEE: Well I need to go the emergency room for stitches.
ME: Why? (with more concern then irritation this time)
LEE: I sort of cut my thumb open. It’s not hanging off or anything, but it’s cut pretty bad.
ME: Ok.
Turns out Lee was reaching in to his toolbox and accidentally sliced this thumb open on an exacto knife. He has a pretty deep cut on the back side of his thumb, opposite his thumbnail. I went home and worked from there while he went to the ER. He got three pretty blue stitches in his thumb.
Then on Monday morning, I was getting Skyler & Spencer ready for preschool. Skyler ate her cereal and then proceeded to throw it back up in the living room. FUN! Yes, I have given birth to four children and I have worked as a CNA in nursing homes, but I still cannot handle vomit. When I’m sick I throw up in the sink so it goes immediately down the drain. If you throw up in the toilet you have to sit there and look at it which just makes you continue to throw up more. And, yes, I know I’m weird. Don’t we all know that?
So I left Lee to clean that up and I took Spencer to school.
I picked Spencer up from preschool and took him home so Lee wouldn’t have to drag Skyler out of the house. When I went to check on her she had some vomit in her bucket and she told me that daddy always cleans it out for her. I guess so she doesn’t have to look at it and smell it. I don’t know where she gets that behaviour from…hmmm. So I told her I would tell dad to come clean it up. I’m not coming within 10 feet of that.
Skyler spent most of Monday vomiting and sleeping. But she is such a trooper. She kept telling me she wasn’t sick. “I’m not sick mommy.” Yeah, except for that vomit.
Then, just when we thought things were getting back to normal, Keaton came home from school yesterday exhausted. He was crying at the door because Lee wouldn’t unlock it fast enough. And as soon as the door was finally opened Keaton went immediately to bed. And he stayed there until 8am today. He didn’t throw up though. Just slept for 16 hours straight. This morning he got up to go to school and I said no. Isn’t that odd. How many times do you see a kid who wants to go to school and the parent says no? But since he hasn’t eaten since lunch yesterday and he slept for way longer then any average 10 year old, I felt more comfortable with him spending the day at home. Just to be sure he wasn’t getting this awful stomach flu. I don’t want him spreading these germs to classmates just so he can get it back again and spread it all over our house again.
So as I was telling him he’s not going to school I said….
ME: Are you feeling better today?
KEATON: Yeah, I slept for 16 hours.
ME: I know and I want to make sure you aren’t getting this flu. Have you thrown up at all?
KEATON: Nope. My body is a fortress of immunity.
Fortress of immunity?!? I don’t know where he gets this stuff.
So anyway, back to last night. At midnight I was just crawling in to bed and Spencer came downstairs. He wanted to know if I could go upstairs with him. So I did. I figured he just had a bad dream or something. So we are in the hallway and he made some comment to me I can’t remember. Something about he had to show me something in his room. And I thought, “Oh no. This can’t be good.” And oh my god, it was so the exact opposite of good. He had vomited all down the side of his bed. And not a little bit, but a whole heck of a lot. I had to run from the room before I started my own vomit collage on his wall. I, of course, hollered down to Lee and told him I needed his assistance. Lee cleaned it all up and I got Spencer all cleaned up.
We finally got Spencer all settled on the floor with his Sprite and puke bucket and we went to bed.
At three in the morning I heard Lee upstairs talking to Caleb. We had Caleb sleeping on the couch to keep him away from Spencer. But that did no good. Cause I could tell by the urgency in Lee’s voice that Caleb was also throwing up. All over the couch. So Lee got him cleaned up and got him a puke bucket too.
So first thing this morning I took Skyler to preschool. She’s done and over it, so I figured she’d be fine at school.
Then I got to come home and shampoo the carpet in the living room. And as I was shampooing Caleb continued to miss his puke bucket and throw up all over the floor. It’s just a vicious cycle. Don’t you wish you were me?
So that’s my March in a nutshell. If you want to come over and help I would welcome you with open arms. I’ll even give you a glass of Pedialyte cause that’s the kind of friend I am.
